With 26.000ha of agriculture land, Cu Chi district (HCM city) is famous for high-tech agriculture models such as orchid growing, aquarium, crocodile feeding, etc. Besides, growing models follow VietGAP brings hundreds million VND profit to farmers.

According to calculations of Mr. Nguyen Trong Truong, in Tan Phu Trung, with a capacity of over 4 tons/ha, and 5,000 VND/kg, farmers earn about $ 25 million for each hectare of rice. Meanwhile, with vegetables cultivation, yield can reach from 25 to 35 tons/ha, harvesting 5 - 8 times each year…With the price from 4,000 - 5,000 VND/kg as at present, deducting capital, labors, farmers can gain 300 million VND interest per year.

Farmers earn VND300m each year from VietGAP vegetables

"Productivity of vegetables grown under Viet Gap standards decrease about 15 - 2-0% due to less pesticide and the price increases. The importance is cultivation under VietGAP standard ensures safety for both vegetable growers and consumers", Mr Truong said.

Farmer Tran Van Muoi, in Tan Phu Trung commune shared, when commencing application of VietGAP, he met a lot of difficulties in recording cultivating diary, and implementing other standards. After a few of crops, he was getting used to with new technical operations. "VietGAP vegetables are consumed by Tho Viet Cooperative with stable price, so everybody is more excited and eager to participate", Muoi said.

According to Mr Le Tan Tam, representative of Tho Viet Cooperative, the difficulty of VietGAP is output because consumers haven't been able to distinguish VietGAP products with others. Also, higher price of VietGAP vegetable due to preliminary treatment and packaging processes makes consumer flinch.

Mr Nguyen Huu Phu - Vice president of Cu Chi People's Committee commented that the transition from low-productivity agriculture model to high-yield agricultural products cultivation with safety quality is the general policy of the whole city. Moreover, the vegetable productivity of farmers in the city just meets about 30% demand of the market. Therefore, development opportunities for vegetables products in suburban districts are still very large. In addition, intercropping vegetables after the rice crop on alum soil will bring higher economic efficiency in comparison to growing rice only.

"In the near future, Cu Chi will plan to implement the model of growing vegetable under VietGAP standard associated with ecotourism at 8 communes along Sai Gon river with the aim of creating stable output and improve income for people", Phu said.
