Greenhouse gas inventory training for local enterprises in Dong Thap province

On July 12, 2024, the Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Vietnam – STAMEQ (formerly Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality), coordinated with the Department of Science and Technology of Dong Thap province to hold a greenhouse gas inventory training for local enterprises in Dong Thap province.

Joining the meeting were also representatives of departments such as Natural Resources and Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Construction and  Dong Thap University.

Dr. Ha Minh Hiep, Acting Chairman of Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Vietnam presented an overview about various types of greenhouse gas that cause greenhouse gas effect.

At the meeting, Dr. Ha Minh Hiep, Acting Chairman of the Commission presented an overview about types of gases that cause greenhouse gas effect, reporting and verifying greenhouse gas inventory reports and carbon footprints.

In particular, the presentation highlighted the importance of applying international standards in measurement, calculation, inventory, inventory report, carbon reduction report, carbon neutrality report and reports verification. He helped to systematize both international standards and Vietnamese standards relating to greenhouse gas measurement, report and verification (MRV), including those specifying requirements for independent validation and verification bodies.

Mr. Tran Quoc Dung, Director of Vietnam Certification Centre (QUACERT) introduced about carbon neutrality, carbon certificate market and the application of ISO 14068-1:2023.

The ISO 14060 series contains various standards relating to different phases such as inventory calculation, carbon footprint quantification, carbon calculation for greenhouse gas reduction/elimination project… These are important grounds helping the reports done by Vietnamese enterprises to be recognized globally.

The application of both international standards and Vietnamese standards ensures that the report scopes are inclusive, covering all 6 direct and indirect emission sources, which guarantees their accuracy and trustworthy, while Vietnamese regulatory relating to greenhouse gas inventory is just covering 01 direct source and 01 indirect source.

In the meeting, Mr. Tran Quoc Dung, Director of Vietnam Certification Centre (QUACERT) introduced carbon neutrality, carbon certificate market and the application of ISO 14068-1:2023 in carbon neutrality roadmap. This standard provides scientific method basis to assess, identify the active subject, scope, scale, boundaries that create or reduce/eliminate greenhouse gas, leading to develop and implement the appropriate plan and roadmap to carbon neutrality.

Speaking at the training workshop, attendants acknowledged and agreed that the presentations contained much practical information that can help local authorities and enterprises understand more thoroughly about the greenhouse gas inventory implementation method in practice as well as carbon neutrality process.

Representatives from many enterprises, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dong Thap University all expressed their wishes that Dong Thap Department of Science and Technology would co-ordinate with relevant departments of STAMEQ to hold more in-depth training sessions to help provide in-depth knowledge and practical skills in calculating and reporting for greenhouse gas inventory at enterprises.

Representatives also expected relevant governmental offices to build database for emission factor of different sectors, industries as well as carbon footprints of products to enhance the accuracy of the calculation.
